01. AI-Driven Memory Chip Inflation Spills Over to Consumer Electronics Makers

On June 4, Morgan Stanley warned that the AI-fueled scramble for memory chips is pushing "chipflation" into the global consumer electronics market. Memory suppliers are prioritizing data center and AI server clients, leaving PC and smartphone makers to fight over dwindling available supply.

Microsoft stated that rising chip prices have added roughly $25 billion in extra costs this year. IDC expects PC and smartphone demand to weaken in 2026 as component costs continue to climb. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron stand as the primary beneficiaries of the AI-led memory shortage.

02. DRAM Spot Prices Triple in Six Months

On June 4, Nikkei reported that bulk transaction prices for PC-use DDR5 rose 6% month-over-month in April, marking the fourth consecutive monthly increase. Traded at roughly $10 per unit just six months ago, prices have now surged to approximately $35. With major global DRAM producers prioritizing AI shipments, the supply crunch for general-purpose products persists.

03. SK Hynix Plans to Double Wafer Capacity Within Five Years as AI Memory Demand Remains Tight

On June 3, SemiMedia reported that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won announced at Computex Taipei that SK Hynix plans to double its wafer capacity over the next five years to meet AI demand that is continuously reshaping the global memory chip market. He reiterated that memory chip supply tightness could extend through 2030.

SK Hynix aims to become the primary HBM supplier for NVIDIA's next-generation Vera Rubin platform. Chey noted that the HBM4E production timeline will depend on customer demand, adding that HBM4E currently has one major customer—widely understood to be NVIDIA.

04. Walsin Technology Raises Resistor and Capacitor Prices Starting June

On June 4, semiconductor industry media reported that Walsin Technology has implemented price increases on select resistor and capacitor products, with customer notification dated May 27 and adjustments effective June 1.

The company stated that although it had previously absorbed costs through internal measures, sustained market demand growth has made the price adjustments necessary.

05. Foxconn Marches Into European Sovereign AI Market, Partners with French Firm Bull for Local AI Server Production

On June 2, Economic Daily News reported that Foxconn has announced a partnership with Bull, a French leader in advanced computing and AI, to jointly manufacture AI servers and infrastructure in France and the Czech Republic—marking its first foray into the European sovereign AI market.

Foxconn stated that European sovereign AI infrastructure will be produced locally, with manufacturing and initial testing conducted at its Pardubice facility in the Czech Republic, followed by assembly, final integration, and system-level validation at Bull's Angers plant in France.

06. NVIDIA Pushes Into AI PCs, Opening Opportunities for Taiwan-U.S. Supply Chain

On June 3, Commercial Times reported that NVIDIA is aggressively targeting the AI PC market with the launch of its RTX Spark AI PC platform. The company is collaborating with MediaTek to develop next-generation AI PC processors integrating CPU, GPU, and AI computing capabilities—accelerating the shift of AI applications from the cloud to edge devices.
